Beginning the Craziness
Odyssey, the gold – and the world…
Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc., on Friday, May 18, 2007, announced a major recovery of silver and gold coins and other artifacts from a sunken ship located in the Atlantic Ocean outside the territorial waters of any nation.
Initial reports of the find were published in various newspapers, blogs and on other media web sites. A majority of the first stories, attributed to AP reporter Mitch Stacy, were illustrated with a photo showing pallets of plastic five gallon pails being unloaded from an aircraft. The pails were said to contain approximately 500,000 coins weighing about 17 tons. While the majority of coins were said to be silver there were also some gold coins. Odyssey representatives did not place a value on the find.
And that’s just the beginning; from there the stories went wild.
More to come…
